Hangover Headaches

If you have ever had a hangover then more likely than not you have suffered through the hangover headache. Besides the nausea, fatigue, and aches and pains of a hangover, the throbbing head and pounding temples are one of the most common side effects and complaints of drinkers everywhere. While you can guarantee not to get one by avoiding alcohol all together, if this is not possible there are some things that you can do to keep one from happening.

Prevention Means Prepare

Part of prevention is preparation, which you can better do if you understand the process of how a hangover headache happens. First of all, alcohol is a diuretic, so you end up flushing needed fluids from your body during your frequent trips to the bathroom, causing you to become dehydrated. It can affect your pain receptors. It can cause inflammation of your blood vessels. It can also affect the livers ability to make glucose, which in turn affects the brain. Plus, it will affect your sleep. All of these factors contribute to the nasty headache you wakeup with in the morning.

There are several ways that you can try to avoid the searing pain in the morning. A greasy meal before drink helps to slow down the rate at which alcohol is absorbed. Carbohydrates work will for this process too and also help the body stock up on glucose. Fruit juices can be a great way to prevent dehydration and replenish lost vitamins and minerals. Drinking water throughout the evening will also slow dehydration.

Easy Does It

Watching how much and what you drink is also helpful. Drink slowly to give your body time to process. Clear alcohol is easier on the system than dark ones, and more expensive alcohols have fewer of the impurities that will give you a headache.

Aspirin taken the night before may be helpful in preventing a hangover. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are helpful afterwards, but should not be taken while there is still alcohol in your system since they can affect the liver and cause further problems.

The Morning After the Night Before

Even trying your hardest to prevent a hangover, drinking alcohol still puts you at risk for a hangover headache. Some people will turn to their coffee pot when they wake up. While this will help the inflammation causing your headache, it will only dehydrate you further. So combine a small cup of coffee with plenty of water and juice to get everything balanced out again.

Acidic juices may be hard on the stomach, so sticking to low acid juices like apple may sit better. Sports drinks can also be helpful since they have essential electrolytes that help with dehydration.

While, like caffeine, the “hair of the dog” remedy will provide temporary relief, all it does is postpone your hangover symptoms, put more toxins into your body, and dehydrates you further. This in turn will leave you feeling all the sicker once the buzz wears off. So sticking to nonalcoholic beverages is going to be a better bet if you want to get over your hangover quickly.
