Numerous studies have revealed that those who suffer from the sleeping disorder called sleep apnea are snorers. Snoring is often one of the first signs of this problem. People can spend years trying to find a way to stop their noisy snoring problem. After trying sleep position and lifestyle alterations, sometimes a more drastic step is necessary.

Similarities with Sleep Apnea
An obstruction of the nasal passages and throat is behind both snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. This obstruction restricts the amount of air coming in; at the same time the vibrations of the air in the obstruction produces the snore. Advertised as one of the most successful, cost effective, non-surgical interventions for both snoring and apnea, CPAP could be worth a try.
What is CPAP? Its stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure. This technology was invented by an Australian scientist specializing in sleep research, Colin Sullivan, in 1981.
Candidates for CPAP
In order to utilize this method you need to be able to breathe through your nose. People who are only mouth breathers wont be helped. The device is not hard to use. It works with a mechanical air pump.
The pump sits on the floor by the bed. Air is passed through a plastic hose to a facemask held over the nose by straps around the head. The air then flows into the nostrils, preventing air passage obstruction and allowing for easier breathing.
This is not something you just pick up at the drugstore, taken home and use. You must first consult with a physician and get a prescription for the CPAP mask. Sleep studies must be undertaken and a trained sleep technician will have to decide on the correct amount of airflow and program the machine for you.
Since the invention of CPAP devices there have been many changes. Newer models are much smaller and easier to use than the original ones. There are even travel-sized models specially designed for airplane travel. Note: first check with your individual airline, as some are hesitant to allow oxygen on board due to fire concerns. Also. the airline needs to be able to seat the user near a power outlet.
When used properly CPAP masks have an incredibly high success rate. Studies have shown if used right there is a nearly one hundred percent success rate in eliminating a sleepers snore. As for obstructive sleep apnea, CPAP eliminates any obstruction so this problem is also taken care, of allowing the person to sleep soundly knowing this simple device may actually be a lifesaver.
